Tottenham: Mauricio Pochettino vents frustration over lack of transfers

Mauricio Pochettino has claimed that his title at Tottenham should be changed due to his lack of influence over the club’s transfer dealings.

Speaking to the press following Spurs’ 1-0 win over Real Madrid in the Audi Cup via the Guardian, Pochettino launched an extraordinary attack at the Tottenham board over the lack of input he has over who the club bring in, and that he is not a manager but just a coach who tells the players what to do.

Pochettino said: “I am not in charge and I know nothing about the situation of my players. I am only coaching them and trying to get the best from them. Sell, buy players, sign contract, not sign a contract, I think it is not in my hands, it’s in the club’s hands and Daniel Levy.

“The club need to change my title and description. Of course, I am the boss deciding the strategic play, but in another area, I don’t know. Today, I feel like I am the coach.”

Despite breaking their club-record transfer this summer to bring in Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele for a reported £53.8m (per BBC Sport), the French international remains the club’s only major signing this window, with Spurs also signing Leeds United winger Jack Clarke, however, the youngster was immediately loaned back to the Championship side for next season (per BBC Sport).

Indeed, Tottenham’s lack of summer dealings has left Pochettino frustrated, with the club repeatedly linked to the likes of Giovani Lo Celso, Paulo Dybala and Ryan Sessegnon this summer (per Football London), yet, little movement has seemingly been made to bring these names to north London.

With Spurs reaching the Champions League final last season, many would have expected the higher-ups at the club to be eager to expand on this achievement by handing Pochettino the funds necessary to improve the team, but it appears that for Levy and company, this isn’t enough.

Pochettino clashing with the Tottenham board over transfers is nothing new, with the Spurs boss saying in a press conference via ESPN in 2017 that he urged Levy to make signings earlier in the window rather than in the final weeks, but it appears that the problem this year seems to be much more concerning.

Although the club-record transfer for a player has been broken this summer, Tottenham need to bring in more than just Ndombele. With a replacement for Kieran Trippier yet to be found following his move to Atletico Madrid and with Pochettino seemingly having no say in who could potentially be brought in, the situation at Spurs looks worrying heading into the new season.

Tottenham fans, is Pochettino right to go after Levy? Let us know!
