Tottenham simply cannot afford to lose linked-away Victor Wanyama

Wanyama

According to a recent report from La Repubblica (via The Daily Mirror), Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama could be set for a move away this summer. The 27-year-old made the move to North London back in 2016 after impressing in a three-year stint at Southampton, although injuries restricted him last term, and appear to have prompted interest in his services during the close season.

And that’s because Roma are reportedly keen on the £27 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), and were Mauricio Pochettino’s men to indeed lose the midfielder, it would mean that they would have endured their worst summer in many a year.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, having finished 23 points adrift of Premier League champions Manchester City, and having gone another season without a trophy, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Spurs would seek to make improvements ahead of the 2018/19 season to give Pochettino the squad needed to challenge for major honours.

But with just a few days before the transfer window slams shut in England, the North Londoners have yet to make a signing, although they have at least tied several first teamers down to new deals over the course of the summer.

Thus, no new additions will place even further emphasis and pressure on those already at the club to produce the goods and more this time round, and given the influence Wanyama has had during his short time at the club, he is one man they simply have to retain.

The Kenya international may not have featured as regularly as he would have liked last season as a result of injury, but his first campaign at Spurs proved him to be one of the most impressive central midfielders in the Premier League, as the 27-year-old struck up a sensational partnership with Mousa Dembele to help Pochettino’s side finish second.

That season alone, and the impact he had in helping break things up in the middle of the park alongside getting on the ball and launching attacks, should be enough to convince the Tottenham hierarchy that they simply shouldn’t let Wanyama go this summer, not least the fact that he still has another three years on his contract, and finding a replacement would be very tricky indeed.

Thus, given they have yet to make any signings this summer, which itself is enough to have frustrated Spurs fans, it’s now imperative that they don’t lose any of their most influential first teamers – Wanyama falls into that bracket.

And were Roma to indeed step up their interest and land the midfielder, it would mean that Pochettino’s side have endured their worst summer transfer window in many a year.
