According to a report from The Athletic, Tanguy Ndombele is hopeful of securing a move away from Tottenham during the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Ndombele’s lack of consistency

The midfielder was booed off the pitch by a section of Spurs fans after he slowly traipsed off the field following his substitution in the Lilywhites’ 3-1 FA Cup win over Morecambe on Sunday.

Whilst head coach Antonio Conte refused to comment on the incident during his post-match conference, it is said that senior figures at the club are disappointed with the Frenchman’s actions.

Ndombele’s career at Tottenham has never truly taken off, and it was hoped that a highly successful manager in Conte could reinvigorate life into the 25-year-old.

The France international started five of Nuno Espirito Santo’s 10 Premier League games during the 47-year-old's short stint at the club. However, Ndombele has relapsed into a lack of consistency under Conte and has duly played just 80 minutes of Premier League football under the Italian, so his future in N17 looks bleak with the 52-year-old at the helm.

The Latest: Ndombele hopeful of a move away

According to a report from The Athletic, Ndombele is hopeful of leaving Tottenham this month, on either a loan or permanent deal.

There is a mutual understanding between the club and the player that a move would benefit both parties, and the 25-year-old hopes that this could come to fruition during the January window.

The midfielder previously told Spurs over the summer that he wanted to leave the club, and Tottenham were happy to sanction a move for him then, as they are now, if a suitable offer was received. Previous interest has come from Barcelona, but with their current financial struggles, nothing concrete has arisen for the midfielder.

The issue lies with the Frenchman’s £200,000-a-week salary. It will be extremely difficult to find a suitor willing to match that amount, and it has also been accepted that Spurs will not be able to recoup the £55m fee that they paid for him.

The Verdict: A necessary move for both parties

Ndombele’s abilities have always been evident to his various managers at Spurs, but their frustration with the player has often been all too clear. Jose Mourinho admitted that he would ‘expect more’ from the 25-year-old, having proclaimed that his ‘talent is amazing’.

With the World Cup taking place at the end of the year, the Frenchman will be hoping that he might be given the opportunity to add to his seven international appearances during 2022. However, with his current prospects looking bleak under Conte, the chance of him making the cut in Qatar seems unlikely.

Consequently, it would be hugely beneficial for Ndombele to seek a move elsewhere in a bid for more game-time. This would also be the best option for Spurs, as his mammoth wages would be freed from their books and the equivalent figure possibly being used for getting new signings over the line.
