As per Italian news source InterLive.it, as translated and shared by Sport Witness, there has been a promising update involving Tottenham Hotspur and transfer target Stefan de Vrij.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye de Vrij move...

The Inter Milan mainstay has been repeatedly linked with a move to north London in these last few months, coming after he was a key player for his ex-boss Antonio Conte last season at the San Siro.

De Vrij's current deal is set to expire in 2023 and as the Netherlands international enters the final year of his Inter contract, Spurs and transfer chief Fabio Paratici are seemingly on red alert.

The 30-year-old's performances in Italy this season have apparently 'declined', so much so that Inter may consider selling him in the summer amid their difficulty to agree an extension.

The Latest: Spurs enter pole...

This is where Spurs and Conte come in, with InterLive (via SW) claiming that the Lilywhites are now 'in the very first place' to sign de Vrij.

As well as this, it is believed that Conte is personally eyeing a reunion with the Dutch star as he attempts to bolster Tottenham's defence.

The Verdict: Get it done...

Regardless of his sticky patch of form this year, de Vrij has proven to be pivotal under Conte's leadership and it is certainly possible that he could re-discover his best level in north London.

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson certainly believes that the centre-back would be a brilliant option for Spurs, calling him 'world class' and an 'absolutely perfect' fit recently (Football Insider).

His age may be the only deterring factor as de Vrij slowly enters his twilight years, but as a short term option, he could be the experienced figurehead Conte has been crying out for in his back-three system.
