Tottenham named as most interested party for Memphis Depay

Tottenham are the team most interested in a move for Memphis Depay, who wants out of Barcelona, according to reports in Spain.
The Lowdown: Busy summer
The Lilywhites have wasted no time in furnishing Antonio Conte with some exciting new signings this summer, adding young faces like Yves Bissouma and Richarlison to experienced bargains like Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster.
Even with the capture of the Everton forward however, they could still be deemed a little light in the attacking department going into a hectic season with four big competitions and the scheduling nightmare of a winter World Cup.
The likes of Liverpool and Manchester City boast remarkable levels of depth, and the latest transfer rumour suggests Fabio Paratici and Daniel Levy could be plotting yet another capture after their latest move for Djed Spence.
The Latest: Spurs eyeing Depay
According to Sport, Depay is going to be the ‘victim’ of Barcelona’s moves for Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski.
The versatile forward had originally wanted to stay in Catalonia but must now leave after Ousmane Dembele also penned a new deal, and Tottenham have ‘put the most effort into signing’ the Netherlands international.
Juventus, Roma and Ajax are also named as possible suitors.
The Verdict: Extra playmaker
As the report suggests, the former Manchester United attacker, capable of playing anywhere across the front or in behind a natural number nine, fell down the pecking order this season, recording 12 goals in 27 La Liga showings.
However, his underlying numbers show a player who could still thrive in the right role. As per FBRef, the flying Dutchman ranks in the 75th percentile or higher for every single passing and dribbling metric, most notably sitting in the 97th percentile for progressive carries.
Antonio Conte loves his teams to launch quickly from defence into attack, and this is a player capable of carrying the ball past several players and picking the right pass at the end of it – he sits in the 94th percentile for progressive passes too.
Dubbed a ‘brilliant’ player by Antoine Griezmann, if Barcelona’s summer business forces Depay out on the cheap, Paratici would be foolish not to add him to Conte’s growing ranks.
