Chelsea’s biggest talking point right now revolves around Enzo Fernandez and the growing uncertainty surrounding his future.
The Argentine midfielder has been suspended for two matches by the club after publicly questioning his long-term position and criticising the decision to part ways with former manager Enzo Maresca.
With reports suggesting Fernandez is now prepared to submit a transfer request amid interest from Real Madrid, Chelsea could soon be forced into a major midfield reshuffle.
And if he does depart, it appears the club have already identified a potential replacement — one of his international teammates.
Barco Agrees to Join Chelsea
Valentin Barco has already given the green light to join Chelsea ahead of a possible summer switch, according to Fabrizio Romano.
While a deal has not yet been finalised, the journalist reports that the player has agreed personal terms, leaving the final decision in Chelsea’s hands.
Romano stated: “Valentin Barco has said yes to Chelsea move, personal terms agreed ahead of potential summer transfer.”
He added: “Colo Barco wants Chelsea and it’s all set on player side. Up to Chelsea if/when to proceed, in total control of the deal being at Strasbourg.”
The 21-year-old began his career at Boca Juniors, making his senior debut in 2021 before earning a move to Brighton. However, he struggled to establish himself in the Premier League, managing only a handful of appearances, while a subsequent loan spell at Sevilla also failed to provide a breakthrough.
A permanent switch to Strasbourg last summer has since reignited his career. Initially known for his versatility as a left-back or winger, Barco has excelled in a more central midfield role this season, registering two goals and nine assists in 38 appearances. His creativity and technical quality have made him one of the standout performers at the French club.
With uncertainty surrounding Fernandez, Chelsea’s interest in Barco could prove to be more than just opportunistic.
The Argentine youngster appears ready to make the step up, but the final call rests with the Blues. If they choose to proceed, Barco could arrive as both a replacement and a long-term investment — particularly if Fernandez’s situation continues to escalate.
