With Southampton now a truly recognised Premier League side, it’s safe to say Saints supporters in the Transfer Tavern expect pretty big things these days.
After qualifying for the Europa League last season and having another decent campaign, it’s safe to say Southampton aren’t a team that just scrape past the trap door each and every season.
They’re a well-established unit and there are plenty, including the landlord here in the tavern, that are tipping them for success again this campaign.
Under new manager Claude Puel, there are bound to be ups and downs but realistically, a top-six finish would be fantastic for the Saints.
So with another exciting season on the horizon, we want to open the vault and go through some of the best goals ever scored in the Red and White stripes of Southampton.
We’re talking strikes that reduce grown men to tears and create memories for life.
So with that in mind, here’s THREE of the best goals to ever be scored by a Sunderland player…
3. Bobby Stokes
Whilst this isn’t the biggest or grandest goal we’ve ever seen by a player in a Southampton shirt, it remains, to this day, their most important.
It was Bobby Stokes who scored it, in the 83rd minute of the 1976 FA Cup final. It gave the Saints a 1-0 win over Manchester United and to this day, gave Southampton their only piece of major silverware.
One for the memory book.
2. Matt Le Tissier
Arguably the best player to have ever donned the red and white of Southampton, Matt Le Tissier comes in second in our greatest ever Saints goals.
The strike? A goal against Newcastle in a league match in 1993 which gave a struggling team managed by Ian Branfoot a vital 2-1 victory on the day.
It’s almost funny to think Le Tissier nearly didn’t start this game.
He’d been dropped in the three preceding matches in favour of Paul Moody, who played nearly of his football after a short stint at St Mary’s in the lower leagues of English football.
Thank god he started or we might not have got to see this goal and the rather excellent winner he dispatched on this day too.
1. Mick Channon
Without a doubt one of the best goals you’ll ever see, let alone inclusive of Southampton.
It’s one of the finest team goals we’ve ever seen in England and it was finished off by Mick Channon in a game against Liverpool in the 1981/1982 season.
Brazil-esque, we reckon this goal truly deserves the title of best Saints goal ever.
A tough decision between this and Le Tissier’s goal though.
