If you’re a Sunderland supporter right now, you’ll be keen to get three points on the Premier League board as soon as possible.
One point from three games isn’t the most promising of starts, but it was never going to be easy for the Black Cats this season.
Left to pick up the pieces this time round is former Everton and Manchester United manager David Moyes, who will hope to not only keep Sunderland up this season, but establish them as a respected Premier League side once again.
With bitter rivals Newcastle United condemned to at least one season in the Championship, it’s become a battle between them and Middlesbrough for king of the North East.
And with an exciting season ahead, we want to open the vault and take you back to some of the most exciting Sunderland goals we’ve ever seen.
The goals that won games, broke hearts and created memories and believe us, there’s plenty to chose from.
So with that mind mind, Hayden Atkins takes us through his top three Sunderland goals of all-time…
Wahbi Khazri
Few knew who Wahbi Khazri was when he signed for Sunderland in the January transfer window but after this goal against Chelsea, he needed no further introduction.
The former Toulouse man dispatched this cracker in a May win over Chelsea last season, that really helped the Black Cats to survival.
A superb effort that helped the Black Cats to all three points and a great way to kick off proceedings.
David Vaughan
Perhaps one of the most stunning Tyne and Wear results we’ve ever seen, Newcastle v Sunderland on 14 April 2013 will forever go down in history as the day the Black Cats ran riot.
Paolo Di Canio took his side to St James’ Park with relegation fears of their own and not only did the result stilt those fears, it completely took the North East by storm.
And the pinnacle was James Vaughan’s left-footed strike with a few minutes to go.
This was about the goal and the occasion and for that reason it’s in our list.
Carlos Edwards
A five goal thriller, three penalties and a goal worthy of winning any match in the world- this strike really is a real corker to win our list.
It was dispatched by Carlos Edwards against Burnley back in 2007 in a game of huge significance.
It was a match that edged the Black Cats closer to the Premier League and some have tipped it as one of the best goals in their history.
We’d certainly agree.
