Ex-Scotland striker Ally McCoist has hit out at the Premier League’s pay-per-view football scheme which he believes is seeing teams like West Bromwich Albion treated ‘unfairly’.
The suspension of football due to the pandemic earlier this year saw many things change within the sport, with the closure of stadiums to fans now becoming a huge issue.
With that rule still in place, clubs in the Premier League and beyond continue to play behind closed doors, prompting a decision by the league officials to force the likes of Sky Sports and BT Sport to charge customers to watch games via pay-per-view.
The aforementioned broadcasters have since hit out at the idea, which charges customers £14.95 per game, and it is now being reported that England’s top flight will ‘review’ the PPV idea in the ‘coming weeks’.
What has McCoist said about the Premier League’s PPV scheme?
Speaking on talkSPORT‘s Breakfast Show (Wednesday 28/10, 6.30am), McCoist agreed ‘100%’ with a Baggies fan complaining about the PPV system: “We had a West Brom fan on yesterday and he said that clubs like his seem to get singled out more than the big clubs.
“They think they’ve been unfairly treated and I sympathise with that. We’re 100% in agreement and I think they’ve shot themselves in the foot.
“They’ve missed the feeling, what the public is thinking and I think they’ve shot themselves in the foot.
“Let’s hope for some fireworks in the next meeting and that they change their mind.”
Should PPV football be scrapped?
Whilst the Premier League have seen this as a money making scheme, it has left fans less engaged than ever with football.
With such financial restraints being put on the public during the pandemic, placing extra charges on supporters at the moment is simply inexcusable.
Football has some serious problems to work out, which include the continuing controversy surrounding VAR, so a reverse in this decision would at least solve one issue plaguing fans’ enjoyment of the game.
