After just two years in east London, it is looking seemingly likely that Javier Hernandez is ready to pack it in and depart the Premier League for a second time.
This is according to ESPN, who claim that the Mexican international wants to play for a club who have confidence in him and that West Ham are willing to sell the former Manchester United striker for between $10 million – $15 million (roughly £7.95 million – £11.92 million).
Hernandez joined the Hammers in the summer of 2017 for a reported fee of £16 million as per BBC Sport, and despite his previous success in England with Manchester United where the striker scored 59 goals in 157 appearances for the Red Devils, the 31-year-old attacker has found it difficult to be consistent for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, scoring just 16 goals in 61 appearances.
With a fairly poor record for a player who has shown in the past that he can be a reliable goal-scorer in the Premier League, it is understandable as to why West Ham are eager to move Hernandez on for less money than they signed him for.
With Pellegrini setting ambitions to take West Ham into Europe via the club’s official website, the Chilean manager will need strikers who are regularly scoring, and with Hernandez not even making double digits last season in all competitions with just eight goals, moving him on this summer seems ideal.
Indeed, with his weekly wage via Spotrac sitting at a club-high of £140,000-a-week, getting that much off the payroll might allow West Ham to reinvest in a new striker this summer with the likes of Andy Carroll leaving on a free and Marko Arnautovic handing in a transfer request according to Sky Sports News as well.
When you consider the fact that Maxi Gomez (per the Daily Mail on June 8th) and Callum Wilson (according to the June 27th edition of the Daily Mirror via HITC) have been linked, making more space for a potential arrival seems vital, with Football FanCast claiming last week that Hernandez’s contract was one of the things holding up potential business.
Hernandez’s time at West Ham hasn’t gone to plan based on his previous reputation in English football, and with sky-high wages taking up a big chunk of the Hammers’ wage bill, the club will do well to ship him off for the max £11 million they are looking for.
