Queens Park Rangers have confirmed on their official website the signing of West Ham United striker Jordan Hugill on loan.
The 27-year-old becomes the fourth striker to depart London Stadium, albeit temporarily, with Marko Arnautovic, Andy Carroll and Lucas Perez having left on a permanent basis.
The former Preston North End player was quoted on QPR’s official website as saying: “I want to get my head down and make my mark here, which is something I need to do for my career.”
Having signed for West Ham in January 2018, Hugill has managed just three appearances in claret and blue, totalling a measly 22 minutes, as per Transfermarkt. In fact, Sam Inkersole of Football.London told Leeds Live last summer that the club only signed him in case they were relegated from the Premier League and described David Moyes’ decision to bring him in as ‘baffling’.
He then went out on loan to Middlesbrough last season, starting 25 matches and coming on as a substitute 17 times in all competitions, scoring seven goals and assisting twice.
This return wasn’t enough to get Middlesbrough into the play-offs, as they missed out by one point and it also failed to convince Manuel Pellegrini to include him in the plans for West Ham’s season.
While it would have been better to sell him, offloading Jordan Hugill is the right thing to do, though there seems very little chance he will be able to do enough on loan to show he should pull on the West Ham shirt in the future, considering the fact they spent a lot of money on Sebastian Haller.
Even with the shortage of strikers the Hammers now have, with Javier Hernandez and Haller currently the only first-team strikers, the 27-year-old will not be missed, as he simply hasn’t made any sort of real impact.
