West Ham: Noel Whelan sends message to Lucas Paqueta after Everton defeat

West Ham: Noel Whelan sends message to Lucas Paqueta after Everton defeat -Premier League News

Ex-BBC pundit Noel Whelan has sent a message to West Ham United record-signing Lucas Paqueta after his disappointing performance in the Hammers’ 1-0 loss to Everton.

The Lowdown: Defeat to Everton

The Irons travelled to Goodison Park to face off against the Toffees, who were in search of their first win of the new Premier League season.

Neal Maupay got off the mark in a Blues shirt, scoring the only goal of the game in the 53rd minute.

Paqueta, who joined West Ham in a record deal worth £51m, played just 62 minutes before being substituted off by David Moyes following a sub-par display.

As per SofaScore, the Brazil international lost possession seven times, failed to complete a dribble and won just two of his 11 duels during the match.

The Latest: Whelan’s claim

Whelan, who used to work as a pundit for BBC Radio Leeds, has warned Paqueta that the spotlight will now be fully focused on his performances after he arrived at the London Stadium in a deal which broke West Ham’s transfer record.

Speaking with Football Insider, the pundit claimed:

“Welcome to the Premier League, young man.

“You don’t have time on the ball, especially when you’re away at Everton – a team looking for their first win.

“It was always going to be a frenetic game, and that midfield area was a key area.

“It wasn’t the easiest game to throw him into. It might have been a game in which you need a bit more experience.

“But when you’re looking to get points on the board as West Ham are, and you’ve paid a lot of money for that player – he’s got to get that opportunity.

“It’s an experience he has to learn from. The spotlight is on him because of the money West Ham paid.

“There’s no doubt he has quality, but that was a really difficult game to stamp your authority on.

“You’re not going to get as much time on the ball in the Premier League as you are abroad.”

The Verdict: Needs time to settle

In a similar situation to when Liverpool’s Brazil international Roberto Firmino arrived, Paqueta will also need time to adjust to the play-style in the Premier League.

This is exemplified by his underlying stats, which illustrate his undeniable quality. As per FBRef, compared with positional peers across Europe over the past year, the 25-year-old ranks in the 97th percentile for tackles, in the 94th percentile for pressures, in the 93rd percentile for progressive passes received and in the 86th percentile for shots.

Can you name all of these forgotten West Ham flops...who is this Allardyce signing?

Holding a stylistic likeness to the likes of Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman and Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus, it is easy to see why people have such high expectations for the new Hammers man, and patience is required as we wait to see his true quality.
