A lot of West Ham fans are discussing Johnny Byrne after a fan page asked supporters on Twitter how good they believe the former Iron was when he played at the club.
Byrne is a name for the older generations who follow the Hammers, as he played for them from 1961-1967, via westhamtillidie.
It looked like he would not go down as a cult hero when he first started at Upton Park, as he only managed one goal in eleven appearances in his first campaign. However the attacker started to warm to the club, and ended up scoring 108 goals in 206 top flight, FA Cup and European level matches, whilst also being part of the 1963/64 FA Cup winning team, per Transfermarkt. This is one of just three FA Cup’s which the club have ever picked up.

He was nicknamed ‘Budgie’ at the club, and also managed to pick up a great accolade when he beat club legend Bobby Moore to the Hammer of the Year award in the 1963/64 season, via westhamtillidie. The player had a great career with West Ham and it is clear to see why so many Irons fans are praising the man on Twitter.
Here is what fans had to say following the post:

Bettered only by Moore, hurst and Peters in our legends list, fantastic skills sitting deep behind hurst, would have been I. The WC winning team had he not been badly injured by the Scots earlier that season.genius

He was seriously good.I remember him for his ability to control the ball with one touch when receiving even the longest pass. He combined very well with Hurst and Peters.

Brilliant, with him we won trophies, we didn’t after he left. That’s how good he was.
