Wolves are reportedly 'leading the race' to sign Joao Palhinha in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Wolves need midfield options

Given that Joao Moutinho is now 34 years of age, and Ruben Neves has been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal, the Midlands club certainly need to strengthen in the middle of the park.

Leander Dendoncker and Morgan Gibbs-White are other options in the centre of midfield, but strength in depth will be needed at Molineux going into the new campaign.

The Latest: Wolves leading Palhinha race

As per Correio da Manha (via Sport Witness), Wolves are currently 'leading the race' to sign Palhinha, but they face competition from both Everton and Leicester City for his signature.

Sporting Lisbon have set an asking price of €30m (£25.8m) for the 25-year-old, and the Premier League side could include Ruben Vinagre in any part of a propsective deal.

The Verdict: Wolves should sign Palhinha

Wolves should be looking to sign Palhinha in the summer window, especially if Neves decides to depart for Arsenal.

The Portuguese was such a key player in Sporting's title win this year, winning no fewer than 9.1 of his duels per match, while also averaging 3.3 tackles, 1.5 interceptions and 1.2 clearances per game (Sofascore).

Standing at 1.89m in height (6 foot 2), Palhinha should have no trouble whatsoever in adapting to both the aerial and physical demands of the Premier League, and at 25 years of age, he has probably not even reached his peak yet.

It is certainly a deal that Wolves should be looking to complete.
