Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi is ‘unlikely’ to leave Goodison Park this summer, according to Sean Dyche.
The Lowdown: Iwobi exit claims
The Premier League playmaker has entered the final 18 months of his contract on Merseyside but reports last month claimed that the club were looking to tie him down to fresh terms.
However, Turkish outlet A Spor suggested on Thursday that the Toffees star is ‘unhappy’ and ‘wants to leave’ with Fenerbahce eyeing an out-of-window move, though this now won’t happen with their transfer window deadline closing on Sunday.
The Latest: Dyche’s comments
Speaking during his Friday pre-match press conference, Dyche was asked for his verdict about the rumours linking Iwobi with an Everton exit.
As quoted on Twitter by journalist Joe Thomas, the boss replied:
“Sean Dyche, asked about reports suggesting Alex Iwobi is unhappy and could move to Turkey: “Well, I’ve seen him today and he seems to be quite happy at the moment… it is unlikely I would suggest.”
The Verdict: Keep hold of him
Iwobi has been labelled an ‘inspiration’ at Everton by journalist Henry Winter and it’s important that Dyche does everything he can to keep hold of him.
The Nigerian international is currently averaging two tackles and 1.6 key passes per top-flight game, via WhoScored, but is also a threat in the final third having racked up nine goal contributions across all competitions this season.
The Lagos native also offers flexibility having operated in five various positions throughout 2022/23, making him a useful option for Dyche to have in the building should any unexpected injuries occur.
