Arsenal: Gunners ‘very interested’ in signing Declan Rice

Arsenal are ‘very, very interested’ in signing West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice, according to Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth.

The Lowdown: Rice targeted by Premier League giants

The England international is contracted with West Ham until the summer of 2024, with the east London club retaining an option to extend his deal by an extra year, but there are believed to be several Premier League clubs eyeing a move at the end of the season.

Journalist Rudy Galetti told GIVEMESPORT that the race for the 24-year-old is ‘open’, naming both Chelsea and Liverpool as potential suitors, but The Guardian reported that the player is favouring a move to Arsenal.

The Latest: Arsenal keen on Rice

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Sheth ruled out the possibility of West Ham selling the midfielder this month, but stated that the Gunners could make an approach in the summer.

The Sky Sports journalist said: “I can’t see them spending massive, massive money in the January window, because a player like Declan Rice will simply not be available.

“West Ham will not sell Declan Rice in this transfer window, with so little time to go, particularly given the position that they’re in trying to stay in the Premier League.

“So I think that one will be revisited in the summer, and make no mistake about it, Arsenal are very, very interested in Rice.”

The Verdict: Make it happen

The 24-year-old has been hailed as ‘unbelievable‘ by Teddy Sheringham, and it is clear to see why, judging by his performances for West Ham ever since emerging as a first-team player at the London Stadium.

Rice, who is now the Irons’ captain, has been absolutely indispensable for David Moyes’ side, making at least 30 league appearances in the previous four campaigns while also starting every top-flight match this season.

Over the past year, he has displayed his quality in possession by averaging a pass completion rate of 89.8%, ranking him in the 94th percentile compared to other central midfielders. Meanwhile, his solid defensive attributes are best exemplified by his ranking in the 93rd percentile for interceptions.

Mikel Arteta will probably get the opportunity to compete for some of Europe’s best players at the end of the season, with Arsenal highly likely to qualify for the Champions League, and Rice – who has stated his desire to play in the tournament – can definitely be named in that bracket.
