Ivan Toney’s equaliser for Brentford in their 1-1 draw away to Arsenal shouldn’t have stood after an error by VAR official Lee Mason, according to a new claim.

The Gunners faced another vital Premier League clash on Saturday afternoon as they aimed to bounce back from the disappointing 1-0 defeat to Everton last weekend.
It proved to be another frustrating day at the office for Mikel Arteta‘s side, though, as despite taking the lead through Leandro Trossard they allowed Toney to equalise soon after.
It now appears as though VAR controversy may have cost Arsenal dearly at the Emirates Stadium.
The Latest: Mason’s error on VAR
Taking to Twitter in sharing a corresponding article for The Daily Mail, journalist James Sharpe claimed that Toney’s goal shouldn’t have stood, with Mason forgetting to draw the lines which would have seen Christian Norgaard deemed offside.
He noted:
“VAR Lee Mason forgot to draw offside lines on Ivan Toney’s equaliser in a mistake that could have a huge impact on Arsenal’s title hopes. Christian Norgaard was offside. Had the lines been drawn, the goal would have been disallowed.”
The Verdict: Could prove so costly
This has the potential to be a massive moment in Arsenal’s season, with Mason’s apparent mistake ultimately costing them two points in the title race.
It is simply unacceptable for such a huge error to be made at a high-profile level, and come the end of the season, it could be the difference between the Gunners winning the title or falling narrowly short.
It is a level of incompetence which should be punished – Mason has previous on VAR, wrongly disallowing Gabriel Martinelli’s goal at Manchester United earlier in the campaign – and Arsenal have every right to feel hard done by.
