Aston Villa: Premier League club targetting striker Christoph Monschein

Aston Villa are interested in signing striker Christoph Monschein from Austria Wien in the January transfer window, according to a report from Sport 24.

Dean Smith’s side are thought to have been closely monitoring the 27-year-old recently.

The Villans could well be in the market for a new striker in January. Jonathan Kodjia could potentially leave as they look to command a fee for him before his contract expires, with clubs from Qatar and France reportedly interested in him (Inside Futbol).

If that did happen, it would leave them very thin in terms of numbers up front with just two strikers in Wesley and Keinan Davis at the club.

According to the report from Sport 24, the West Midlands outfit have been watching Monschein and may be tempted to try and take him to Villa Park in January.

Austria Wien currently have some financial problems and could choose to cash in on the 27-year-old, who is reportedly valued at around €5m (£4.3m).

This deal on paper could well prove to be an astute piece of business by Aston Villa.

Monschein is in fantastic form this season and has scored 13 goals in 18 appearances already in Austria, whilst also providing seven assists (Transfermarkt).

Those are fantastic numbers and if he is available for €5m, then he looks well worth taking a punt on.

If he did join Villa, then it would put pressure on their current first-choice striker Wesley. The Brazilian has scored just four goals so far this season and hasn’t netted in his last four appearances (Transfermarkt).

He will need to improve his form in the coming weeks in order to cement his place as the club’s number-one forward, because if he doesn’t, he could well find himself on the bench if the in-form Monschein arrives at Villa Park.
