Spurs being linked with a striker most be the must overused sentence in English football right now. That and Man United looking for a top goalie. However while many fans maybe getting bored of the subject, would a possibility of Sergio Aguero being available in the summer reignite your interest?
Atletico Madrid’s attempts to swoop for Lille forward Gervinho ahead of Liverpool may be bad news on Merseyside, but could be excellent for Tottenham Hotspur. It has led to hopes that Spurs boss Harry Redknapp will submit a renewed bid to sign Sergio Aguero from the Spanish club.
Spurs had a £38m bid rejected on the final day of the January window for the Argentine as they tried desperately to bolster their attacking line. Aguero has recently commented that he is happy at his current club and a wish to see out his contract which runs to 2014.
The player stated on the clubs official website; “I want to stay with Atletico for as long as I can. I am very comfortable at the club now……I signed until 2014 and I hope to stay beyond this year.”
However the decision may not rest with the Argentine as Atletico deal with the financial implications of missing out on Europe for a second successive season. Atletico are currently having a disappointing season in La Liga sitting 8th in the table 11 points behind the Champions League places. Many doubt the club would be able to hang on to its top stars Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan should they fail to qualify for Europe altogether.
The speculation certainly hasn’t hampered Aguero’s form and the striker is enjoying a fine season, netting a brace last weekend to take his tally for the year to 18 goals, ensuring Atletico are still in contention to clinch a Europa League spot for next season.
On the speculation over a possible summer transfer, he responded: ”It’s always appreciated if top clubs are interested in you. There are many comments that have been raised about my future but I’m quiet, they don’t affect me. I’m honest with myself.’
Tottenham will no doubt pursue a move for the Argentine this summer, especially if Atletico do fail to gain a European spot, he could even be available for cheaper than the £38 mil Spurs offered in January. Spurs could certainly do with his goals with midfielders Gareth Bale and Van der Vaart providing most of them so far with 23 between them. The only Spurs striker worth a mention would be Pavlyuchenko with 11.

Typical of Spurs of late. Pay 38M on a striker who is no better than Gervonho, who could be had for half as much and who will likely be every bit as talented as Drogba or Adebayor. COYS
for youre info: gervinho is a winger not a striker.
For your info, he can also play as a striker, and has a very healthy scoring record as such.
