Chelsea are preparing for a major rebuild this summer following the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the club’s new manager.
The Spaniard arrives at Stamford Bridge with a fascinating reputation. Alonso guided Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga title in 2023/24 and quickly established himself as one of Europe’s brightest young coaches before a difficult and brief spell at Real Madrid ended prematurely.
Now tasked with reviving Chelsea on the pitch, Alonso is expected to push for significant changes to the squad, particularly in defence after another inconsistent campaign at the back.
And it appears one of his most trusted former players could already be under consideration.
Chelsea Considering Tapsoba Move
Chelsea are reportedly weighing up a summer move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba as Alonso begins shaping his squad for next season.
According to TEAMtalk, the Blues are exploring the possibility of signing the Burkina Faso international, who played a central role in Alonso’s historic Leverkusen side.
Tapsoba, previously described as “incredible” by former Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller, became one of Alonso’s most relied-upon players during their time together in Germany.
Across Alonso’s spell in charge, the defender made well over 100 appearances and was a cornerstone of the team that stormed to the Bundesliga title without losing a single league game.
Chelsea’s interest comes amid growing concerns over their defensive depth and consistency. Injuries, poor form and uncertainty surrounding several centre-backs have left the club short of reliable options, making reinforcement at the back a major priority heading into next season.
Tapsoba’s profile is believed to appeal strongly to Alonso. Comfortable playing out from the back but also physically dominant defensively, the 27-year-old has built a reputation as one of the Bundesliga’s most dependable central defenders over recent years.
