Tottenham fans couldn’t believe what they were seeing when Paulo Gazzaniga chose to come flying out feet-first towards Marcos Alonso and take him out at chest-height rather than simply catching the ball. The resulting penalty was scored by Willian, and it ultimately pushed the match beyond Spurs’ reach.
He’s made 11 starts in the Premier League this season, after Hugo Lloris dramatically broke his arm while making a save. Aside from the calamity on Sunday, he’s not had too bad of a time between the sticks, with WhoScored rating him 6.65/10 for his showings compared to the much more experienced Lloris’ 6.87/10 rating for the campaign.
The fact he’s not been making huge errors consistently is perhaps why the Spurs fans were so shocked by what happened. The club tweeted the news that Willian had scored the penalty and many fans replied to show just how bemused they were by the goalkeeper’s decision to not bother using his hands.
45 – Goal for Chelsea. Willian from the spot.

Make sure Gazzaniga never plays again. How does a goalie not know he can use his hands?!

Don’t know what Gazzaniga was thinking. Penalty was the right decision. Didn’t need VAR for that. #TOTCHE
