Chelsea face a hugely important summer after a disappointing campaign that saw them finish 10th in the Premier League and miss out on European football altogether.
New manager Xabi Alonso has already arrived at Stamford Bridge tasked with overseeing a major rebuild, and while keeping hold of key players will be important, recruitment could prove even more crucial if the Blues are to avoid another frustrating season.
Several names are already being linked with a move to west London, and one high-profile Premier League star now appears to be firmly on Chelsea’s radar.
Chelsea Monitoring Rashford Situation
Chelsea are reportedly among the clubs keeping a close eye on Marcus Rashford’s uncertain future at Manchester United.
The England international, described as “unbelievable” by Barcelona boss Hansi Flick, enjoyed an impressive campaign on loan in Spain, contributing 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances.
According to The Mirror, Chelsea are monitoring developments after talks between Barcelona and Manchester United hit a stumbling block.
The Catalan giants had been expected to make Rashford’s move permanent, but negotiations have become increasingly complicated, with Barcelona attempting to restructure the deal after spending heavily elsewhere.
United are understood to be growing frustrated with the situation and could now explore alternative options for the 28-year-old, who reportedly has no interest in returning to Old Trafford.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe is believed to be keen to remove Rashford’s sizeable wages from the club’s books, while new manager Michael Carrick is eager to finalise his transfer plans as soon as possible.
Chelsea are one of several clubs tracking the situation, alongside Arsenal, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur.
However, United would ideally prefer not to strengthen a direct Premier League rival, potentially making any deal more difficult to complete.
With Barcelona’s pursuit no longer straightforward and United increasingly eager to find a resolution, Chelsea could be presented with an unexpected opportunity in the weeks ahead.
