The long-term future of Everton winger Anthony Gordon is still in doubt, according to journalist Paul Brown.
The Lowdown: Gordon’s transfer request
Amid heavy transfer interest from Chelsea towards the end of the summer window, the 21-year-old informed the Merseyside outfit and manager Frank Lampard that he wanted to leave the club and join the west London giants.
The Athletic reported Chelsea’s willingness to spend £50m, with a further £10m in add-ons, for the attacker.
However, Lampard was adamant Gordon would remain with the club, having already lost Richarlison this summer.
The Latest: Brown’s claim
Brown believes there is still serious doubt as to where Gordon’s long-term future lies. As a result, he has urged the Toffees to end the speculation by getting the youngster to sign a new and improved deal with the club.
Speaking with GiveMeSport, the journalist claimed:
“So, there is still some doubt about his long-term future.
“And I think Everton should be doing everything they can to convince him that they are the right club for him and that he should stick around for a bit longer.”
The Verdict: Crucial to Everton
With Everton’s lack of attacking threat, Gordon’s goal-scoring ability has proven crucial for Lampard’s side in recent times, with the youngster having scored half of their Premier League goals thus far this season.
Illustrated by his positional-peer ranking in the top one percent for blocks and in the top four percent for pressures and tackles made across Europe (via FBRef), the 21-year-old has also been hailed for his defensive work ethic and desire to win the ball back across the pitch.
Dubbed an ‘absolute beast’ by journalist Jeff Wallner, the Toffees should do everything they can to tie the starlet down to a new long-term deal.
