Loads of Everton fans were left delighted by the performance of Mason Holgate on Saturday, as the Toffees fought for a difficult point in east London.
Given that he is 23 years old and hadn’t really made a lasting impact on the first-team yet, Holgate may well have been in the last chance saloon at the start of this season. He certainly isn’t anymore, and in fact many supporters are saying he is the standout player in the squad at the moment.
After delighting fans with his performance in the win at Newcastle, he was back to his best again on Saturday in the 1-1 draw against West Ham. Per Sofascore, the young defender made seven clearances, including one off the line, four tackles, two blocks, completed 89% of his passes and of course provided the assist for Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s equalising goal shortly before half-time.
He also completed four of his seven attempted long balls, and even made two successful dribbles, showing he has the ball-playing ability to match his superb defensive display.

Holgate the only standout for me. Everyone else was average/poor.

A point from behind on the road without Richarlison is ok. West Ham are awful. Everton terrible in the midfield. Holgate the best player on the pitch and it wasn’t close.
