Everton have reportedly made a 'new inquiry' to try and sign Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta before the transfer deadline.

The Lowdown: Desperation kicking in

Desperation is almost certainly kicking in at Goodison Park, as Everton have still not managed to bring anyone in with the deadline at 11pm edging closer.

After letting winger Anthony Gordon go to Newcastle United, they need to bring in at least one attacker in the next hour, sitting as the second-lowest scorers in the Premier League with 15.

The Latest: Mateta 'inquiry'

Taking to Twitter tonight, journalist Alan Nixon says that the Merseyside club have made a 'new inquiry' over the possibility of signing Mateta, sharing the story on his Patreon:

"Everton make new inquiry for Mateta."

The Verdict: Premier League experience

What Mateta does possess is Premier League experience, with this being the third season in the top flight with Palace.

However, he has only managed to score twice against the Toffees last term, one in the Premier League and one in the FA Cup.

The six-foot-four colossus possesses other qualities that Sean Dyche's side can utilise, including his aerial ability, where he ranks in the 77th percentile for aerials won per game of all forwards in Europe's top five leagues over the past year.

If Mateta can just take more of his chances, as he does rank in the 84th percentile for non-penalty xG, then he could really help the Blues in the second half of the season, and with so little time remaining they may have no other choice but to try and get this deal over the line.
