Plenty of Everton fans have voiced their disagreement with the decision to overlook Ben Godfrey for England’s senior squad this month.
Godfrey, along with Toffees team-mate Tom Davies, has instead been called up for the under-21s, with the duo set to take part in the group stages of the Under-21 European Championships at the end of the month.
The senior team will play three World Cup qualifiers in the final opportunity to don the white shirt before the end of the season and, indeed, before the rescheduled Euro 2020 finals.
Gareth Southgate has attended several Everton matches recently, prompting Toffees boss Carlo Ancelotti to talk up Godfrey’s international prospects (via The Guardian). The 23-year-old’s performance in last month’s 2-0 win over Liverpool was hailed as “outstanding” by BBC Sport’s Phil McNulty, who also described him as a “revelation” in his first season at Goodison Park.
Southgate will confirm his squad on Thursday, with Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin hopeful of retaining their places.
With Godfrey linking up with the under-21s, it remains to be seen how the Three Lions manager replaces Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez, who was selected in the last squad in November before suffering a season-ending injury.
For now, these Everton fans were left raging that their “absolute beast” of a defender looks set to miss the senior England cut.
