Everton have opened ‘preliminary’ talks with midfielder Alex Iwobi over a new-and-improved contract at the club.

The Lowdown: Iwobi continues to shine

The Nigerian has gone up a huge gear in a Blues shirt in recent times, really rising to the challenge and becoming an influential part of the midfield.

Iwobi’s good form continued in a losing cause at home to Manchester United on Sunday evening, with the former Arsenal man curling home brilliantly to give his side the lead and finishing the match with the highest rating of any player in blue (Sofascore).

Recent rumours have claimed that a new deal could be coming the 26-year-old’s way and a new update brings good news on that front.

The Latest: New deal incoming?

According to Football Insider, talks are underway over a fresh contract for Iwobi, with the 58-cap Nigeria international described as a ‘transformed’ figure at Goodison Park.

Everton want to tie him down to a long-term deal as a ‘reward’ for his improved form, which has seen him hailed as ‘exceptional’ by ex-Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf.

He is currently on around £90,000-a-week in a deal that runs to 2024.

The Verdict: Would be fully deserved

Iwobi has been one of the biggest positives of the Frank Lampard era at Everton, with the manager turning him into an all-action central midfielder and reaping the rewards.

From being a rather flimsy figure who drifted in and out of the games on the wing, he is now providing genuine quality and work ethic, starting nine Premier League games this season.

A new deal would be richly deserved for Iwobi, who at 26, could now be coming into the prime years of his career, continuing to be a key player for the Blues for years to come.
