Forget Welbeck: Everton should instead target these 2 Arsenal stars this summer

Everton supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating the 2018/19 Premier League season following the appointment of Marco Silva as the club’s new manager earlier in the summer.

The 40-year-old replaced the sacked Sam Allardyce back in May following the Englishman’s departure at the end of last season, this all despite leading the Merseyside outfit to an eighth place finish in the English top-flight. However, he went about it in a way that wasn’t well received by Toffees supporters, with many thrilled to see former Hull City and Watford chief Silva take over and lead the club into the new season.

Thus, there are many excited Evertonians up and down the country, several of whom are likely to be interested by recent reports linking their side with a move for Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck.

The 27-year-old may well have hit a decent run of form in the second half of last season, thus earning a spot in Gareth Southgate’s 23-man England squad for the recent World Cup, yet the forward looks set to be let go by new manager Unai Emery, who is beginning to stamp his authority on things at the Emirates Stadium following his appointment as Arsene Wenger’s successor.

And Everton are one side reportedly keen on Welbeck, yet they should forget about him and instead seek to target these TWO Arsenal stars this summer.

The defensive unit was a key problem area for Everton throughout last term, what with the Toffees shipping more goals over the course of the Premier League season than the relegated duo of Swansea City and West Brom.

And with the likes of Phil Jagielka, Ashley Williams, and even Michael Keane struggling to produce the goods on a consistent basis, new boss Silva could well be on the lookout for another centre back – Shkodran Mustafi could be his man.

The Germany international made a fine start to life in English football back in 2016 by remaining unbeaten in each of his first 22 matches for the Gunners, although he has been linked with a move away from the Emirates in recent times after showing defensive vulnerabilities last season.

And while there may be some question marks regarding his ability, one mustn’t forget how well he adapted to English football, and as such he could well be the answer to Everton’s defensive woes.

Granit Xhaka is another Arsenal man that has been linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium in recent times, and his arrival at Everton would go some way to solving their central midfield problems.

Idrissa Gueye is comfortably the best midfielder at Goodison Park but the other central midfield options did little to convince of their abilities last season, which could force Silva into the market for another option.

And Switzerland international Xhaka could well be the answer as although he has sometimes struggled for the Gunners, he has also shown signs of genuine quality in the midfield area, and alongside the more industrious Gueye, he may have more licence to produce the goods.

As such, he is one Arsenal man they absolutely must target ahead of Welbeck this summer.
