Having already seen the likes of Pontus Jansson, Aapo Halme, Paudie O’Connor and Mallik Wilks make their permanent exits from Elland Road, Leeds United could now be on the verge of losing Vurnon Anita.
Initially linked with a move to Panathinaikos last week (as per SDNA), the midfielder may be about to commit to a switch to the Greek outfit, according to agent Mino Raiola.
“We’ll see what happens.”
With Sport Witness reporting that the Dutchman is expected to terminate his contract with the Whites, he will be available to join I Prasini on a free transfer this summer.
Although Anita offers a great deal of versatility given his ability to operate both as a full-back and as a midfielder, as per WhoScored, it could be argued that letting him leave may not harm Leeds’ fortunes next season if the previous campaign is anything to go by.
Whilst the former Newcastle United man spent the entire year on loan at Eredivisie side Willem II (via Transfermarkt), the Whites thrived in his absence, securing a third-place finish in the Championship in May.
With Kalvin Phillips and Mateusz Klich forming a formidable central-midfield partnership in which they started 92 second-tier games between them last season (via WhoScored), there is no guarantee that Anita will be able to force himself back into Marcelo Bielsa’s plans for the future.
Therefore, it may be beneficial for him to move on to pastures new as it could give him the opportunity to play regular first-team football.
