“Would certainly…”: Nottingham Forest pursuing shock move for “incredible” Manchester City star

Nottingham Forest are looking to build on a turbulent campaign with Oliver Glasner now at the helm and a clear plan to strengthen the squad.

The club have tied Morgan Gibbs-White down to a new long-term contract and have already added Ousmane Diomande from Sporting CP to improve their defence.

In midfield, Xaver Schlager has arrived from RB Leipzig, while Gustavo Sá has also been brought in following the departure of Elliot Anderson to Manchester City.

Forest are not finished there, though, and their latest ambition could involve an expensive raid on the Premier League champions.

Forest Pursuing Move for Reijnders

Nottingham Forest are considering a move for Tijjani Reijnders, although the financial package required to sign the Manchester City midfielder could make a deal difficult.

The 28-year-old has been described as “incredible” by Pep Guardiola but endured an inconsistent first season at the Etihad after arriving from AC Milan for around £46.3 million last summer.

Reijnders started 19 Premier League matches and finished the campaign with seven goals and seven assists in all competitions. However, City’s midfield options have since increased, with Anderson already arriving and Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi reportedly close to joining.

That has left uncertainty over Reijnders’ future, with Newcastle United also understood to be interested.

Former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson believes Forest could be a genuine destination, although he has questioned whether they can afford the complete package.

Speaking to Football Insider, Borson said: “The story about the Tijjani Reijnders deal… That would be a massive deal; I think it would be their record.”

“They’re talking about it being in excess of £60m, which I find very, very hard to believe because it’s also huge wages.”

He added: “It does feel like it’s true, in terms of him leaving. He must be going somewhere, and there aren’t many teams around Europe that can afford him.”

“Forest would certainly be one of them. They can afford to pay the transfer fee, but I don’t know about the whole package.”

Borson concluded: “The wages plus the transfer fee do seem a bit, even out of Forest’s range but I don’t know. We’ll to see.”

A deal would therefore be a major financial commitment for Forest, but if City decide Reijnders is surplus to requirements, Glasner’s side could be one of the few clubs capable of making the move happen.
