Nottingham Forest are a Championship club with great history all fans are proud of, though in terms of the transfer market, the Reds are not commonly associated with spending big money to lure in top players. That being said, for the first time in club history, the Reds broke the £10m barrier to sign João Carvalho from Portuguese side Benfica in the summer prior to the 2018-19 league campaign.
The 21 year old Portuguese attacking midfielder was brought in for a massive £13.50m which was over double their previous record transfer of £6.21m for Peterborough’s Britt Assombalonga in 2014-15. Carvalho is yet to find his feet in the fast paced English game, and he only has one goal and one assist to his name for this season. On the other hand, previous record transfer arrival, Assombalonga proved his worth by scoring almost one goal in every two games before catching the eye of newly relegated Championship club Middlesbrough for a club-record sale fee of over £15m.
This new record transfer departure fee narrowly beat the Reds previous record fee of £13.68m for Scottish youngster who was snapped up by RB Leipzig ahead of the 2016-17 season. Former Bournemouth centre-forwards Lewis Grabban completes Forest’s top three highest ever transfer arrivals, as he joined with Carvalho for just over £6m ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.
The majority of Forest’s previous record transfers were in the 1990s and early 2000s, it was not until the Reds were promoted back up to the Championship in 2008 that they started spending again.
Moving on to a few more previous record departures, in 1995-96 a young Stan Collymore notably left Forest to join Liverpool for upwards of £11m. Collymore is still the Reds third-highest sale of all time, and is ahead of West Ham United star Michail Antonio who left Nottingham Forest in 2015-16 for an £8.5m fee. More recently, 18-year-old Arvin Appiah made his move to LaLiga2 side UD Almeria for £8m making him the Reds most recent high-value sale.
Nottingham Forest have bought and sold many high profile players throughout history, though one stands out in particular. A young Roy Keane joined Forest all the way back in 1990 for just £180k, and the Republic of Ireland legend went on to play for the Reds for three seasons, racking up over 100 appearances before catching the eye of Premier League giants Manchester United. At the time, Keane was Nottingham Forest’s record sale as he joined the Red Devils for a massive £7.65m in 1993.
