Saturday was pretty disastrous from a Sunderland point of view, as the Black Cats lost 3-0 against Peterborough United and had two men sent off.
The first of those dismissals came for Luke O’Nien when he was shown a red card for his part in a coming together with Ivan Toney, as shown on the EFL YouTube channel.
Sunderland tweeted about the incident when it happened, with very little detail:
Sunderland have been reduced to 10 as Luke O’Nien is shown red.

While the tweet itself wasn’t very clear about what had happened during the incident, a lot of the replies to it were and Sunderland fans weren’t impressed with the decision.
After O’Nien connected with Toney, he dropped to the floor holding his face, even though it looked like the Sunderland man had caught his chest.
This just made what was already a poor game even worse and it didn’t stop there, as Charlie Wyke was given his marching orders for two bookable offences.
A selection of Twitter reaction to the sending off, including posts from disbelieving Sunderland fans, can be seen below:
Their player should be booked for being over dramatic, he never even touched his face

It must be a bad game if he’s got a red card

Never a red

Never a red either. Toney making a meal out of it. Makes a bad day even worse. Could end up 4 or 5 now

Doesn’t touch his face, football is a joke. FA have to hand out bans for diving and cheating on later review or it’ll never change
