Leeds: Fans fear 2018/19 repeat after worrying display in front of goal

Loads of Leeds United supporters have been sharing their fears that they may be witnessing a repeat of the scenes which blighted the Whites’ promotion bid in 2018/19.

Fears have been sparked among the Elland Road faithful after Marcelo Bielsa’s United fell to their first defeat of the league campaign on Saturday, when Swansea City were able to snatch all three points in the 90th minute thanks to a late Wayne Routledge strike.

Bielsa’s side had dominated proceedings throughout the fixture and started the game well with Mike van der Hoorn almost scoring an own goal following a wild cross by Stuart Dallas, before Ezgjan Alioski and Patrick Bamford saw chances go begging. Liam Cooper also had a welcoming opportunity to shatter the deadlock going into the break when his header rattled the crossbar, only to blast the rebound over the bar.

The second 45 minutes began in much of the same fashion, when Bamford sliced another effort wide of the post before Freddie Woodman denied Pablo Hernandez. Late substitute Eddie Nketiah was unable to deal any damage, either, after he fired over the bar before pressure by Woodman later saw the Arsenal loanee head wide of the goal frame.

The Whites’ range of chances ultimately proved costly when Routledge tucked a low effort into the back of Kiko Casilla’s net after Leeds failed to clear a corner approaching full-time, and the number of opportunities wasted by the hosts have caused concern among their fanbase.

Altogether, Bielsa’s side fashioned 21 shots on Woodman’s goal on Saturday, but only three of those were deemed to have been on target by statistics company WhoScored. Of the 18 chances missed, half were noted as being off target, while the others were blocked.

Wasting chances ultimately blighted the West Yorkshire side’s bid for promotion last season, as Kemar Roofe fashioned the most efforts on target for the Elland Road natives with 38, but the now-RSC Anderlecht hitman required 101 shots to achieve his tally.

A similar success rate was recorded by Pablo Hernandez (32 shots on target from 111 efforts), Mateusz Klich (29 from 88) and Patrick Bamford (24 from 68), and each of the trio are penning a similar story already this season.

Hernandez has two goals to his name this term but has required 19 shots, eight of which have been on target. Bamford, meanwhile, has four goals from eight shots on target, having attempted 22, and Klich is yet to score a league goal after 13 shots – the third-most by any Leeds player.

Naturally, then, there are some United supporters growing slightly concerned that a repeat of last season may be on the cards after the worrying display in front of goal against Swansea…
