Leeds United fans were lauding Kalvin Phillips after the midfielder ‘muzzled out’ the threat of West Bromwich Albion attacker Matheus Pereira, according to The Athletic’s Steve Madeley.
Phillips enjoyed a brilliant game against the Baggies yesterday as his performance in the middle of the park limited the West Brom man to just 14 forward passes (via WhoScored).
Pereira has enjoyed a brilliant season for Slaven Bilic’s side this campaign as he sits at the top of the assists charts in the Championship (via Sport.de).
The Yorkshire-born man’s performances this season have been a revelation for the Yorkshire outfit as he’s made 25 appearances in the Championship this campaign (via Transfermarkt).
It has seen Phillips been linked with a move to Premier League big boys, Manchester United with Football Insider claiming the Red Devils have been sending scouts to watch the player on a regular basis.
Fans were full of praise for the player after his performance was said to have limited the effectiveness of the dangerous Pereira as they took to Twitter to react.
Here is a selection of tweets from the Elland Road faithful:
Steve, how do you rate Phillips when compared to other defensive midfielders in the division?
I guess he’s pretty much the only one to keep Pereira this quiet, so far?— Lee Wakefield (@Wakefield90) January 2, 2020
Has he climbed out of Philips pocket yet ?

A lot of people claim that this Pereira is a PL player in the making & Phillips just popped him nicely in his back pocket for 90mins 😂
Phillips should be in the England set up – best English CDM in the country #LUFC https://t.co/zwVWtyeuMp

Are we starting to take Phillips for granted? He does this kind of job every game without stealing the headlines most weeks. #lufc https://t.co/moSzRBfaGD

It is to Phillips and Bielsa’s absolute credit, that Phillips doesn’t even get mentioned for MOTM last night. Phillips has become so good at nullifying players like Pereira we almost take it for granted.
He done a majestic job, that really did seem to go unnoticed.

As a good referee goes unnoticed, so does Kalvin these days. He’s set an maintained the bar.
