Leeds United: Fans reflect on club’s 1991/92 First Division title win

Many Leeds United fans have been fondly remembering the Whites’ famous victory over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane, as Sunday marked 28 years since the Whites were crowned First Division champions at the end of the 1991/92 season.

In the dying embers of the old Football League, Howard Wilkinson’s men went to head-to-head with Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United, and came out on top in one last hurrah.

The club’s official Twitter account shared pictures of United’s win away at the Blades, a Yorkshire derby that turned out to be quite a scrappy affair, but a result that proved to be the decisive moment in the two-legged race. Brian Gayle comically couldn’t control a touch and, under pressure from Eric Cantona and Rob Wallace, headed the ball back to Mel Rees, only to watch in horror as his pass lobbed the incoming goalkeeper to hand Leeds a vital three points, and the Peacocks went on to lift their first championship trophy in 18 years (Planet Football).

As expected, lots of supporters raved over the iconic photos on social media, with one fan describing the triumph as “beautiful,” and another adding it was a “magical day.”
