Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson has laid out his worries over the signing of Jean-Kevin Augustin in the January transfer window.
The young striker has joined the club on a season-long loan deal with a view to a permanent transfer from Bundesliga side Red Bull Leipzig (via The Guardian). However, that hasn’t stopped the former Elland Road favourite from displaying his concerns over the 22-year-old as he claimed he could have an attitude problem (Sky Sports via HITC).
He said: “He is a top-class player, his CV stacks up for a top-class player. He has played for his county, at the Under-21 level. He scores goals, but there is a question mark about his attitude off the field. It’s a position that Bielsa has identified and he has taken, in my opinion, a calculated gamble on Augustin.”
Leeds’ needs outweigh any question marks over Augustin’s attitude and you only have to look at the slump in the Yorkshire outfit’s form to see that. Just one win in their last eight games, prior to Tuesday night, as well as having not scored a goal in their last three outings, highlights how bad the team has been performing, especially in attack.
Patrick Bamford has been firing on and off this campaign and desperately needs the competition that will make him perform better, or ensure he is adequately replaced if he’s not scoring. Twice this season, the former Middlesbrough man has gone long spells without a goal. Earlier this year, he went 10 games without a goal and before the Millwall game he hadn’t scored in over 300 minutes for the Whites.
Augustin proves the perfect option for Marcelo Bielsa because he has a relatively good record, having notched up 20 goals in just 67 games for Leipzig (via Transfermarkt). A mixture of the Argentine’s coaching and his ability to develop due to his tender age means he can prove to be the perfect acquisition for the table-toppers for the remainder of the campaign.
