Leeds United: Robin Koch shines for Germany on international duty

Leeds United have various players out on international duty currently, with one being summer signing Robin Koch. He started yesterday for Germany against the Czech Republic and shone in the 1-0 victory.

The defender arrived at Elland Road from Bundesliga side SC Freiburg for £11.70 million and has featured in all eight Premier League games this season.

Koch highlights his quality under Joachim Low

The German played in the centre of the defence in a formation with three centre-backs and picked up a very respectable 7.3 rating on Wednesday night (Futmob). They managed to keep a clean sheet but it was Koch’s individual showing that caught the eye.

His in-game stats highlight how key he was for the 2014 world champions in the match as he made six recoveries, won four aerials duels and made two interceptions.

Koch was not only crucial at breaking up opposition attacks but also good at creating the transition from defence into attack as he made 49 accurate passes, completing them at an 89% success rate.

Koch could be key for Leeds this campaign

If the 24 year-old can shine at such a young age for his country, then there is no doubt that he could be a crucial asset for the club this season. He could be the difference between a relegation battle and mid-table.

He can pass out from the back and is also very physical, highlighted by the aerial duels he won. This seems like the ideal mixture of quality and physical tools for a Marcelo Bielsa side.

He has been praised massively recently in club colours too, with Noel Whelan emphasising how key he is for Bielsa. He said: “I think he did that magnificently again at the back, Robin Koch. I think that helps Luke Ayling, I thought the two of them were magnificent.”

Up next for the Whites is Arsenal. Players like Koch will have to be at their best to keep players like Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang quiet.
