Leeds United Record Transfers

Leeds United are not a club to splash out on big money players by any means, and the majority of their record signings arrived 20 years ago around the new millennium. Their record transfer still stands from the summer of 2000-01, as a young Rio Ferdinand joined the Whites from West Ham United.

The young English centre-back arrived at Leeds United at the age of just 22, for a massive £23.40m which at the time was a British transfer record as well as becoming the world’s most expensive defender. The England international only played 54 games for the Whites before catching the eye of Premier League giants, Manchester United. In the summer of 2002, Ferdinand joined the Red Devils on a five-year deal to become the most expensive British footballer in history at the time, and the world’s most expensive defender for a second time after Lilian Thuram had claimed that title in 2001.

Rio Ferdinand officially joined Manchester United for around £30m at the time; however, after a number of clauses in his contract, United were forced to pay Leeds over £40m for the star man.

Ferdinand’s record transfer arrival fee was almost broken the following season, when a young Robbie Keane arrived from Inter Milan for over £16m. The 20-year-old centre-forward played just one season after a loan spell for the Whites before catching the eye of Tottenham Hotspur. In 2002, the Republic of Ireland international joined Spurs for almost half of what they paid for him one year prior.

Notably, Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler left the Reds to join Leeds United ahead of the 2001-02 season for over £15m in 2001-02, though just one season later, the England international moved on to Manchester City for almost £9m.

In recent years, only two key transfer arrivals really stand out: Helder Costa and Patrick Bamford. Costa arrived from Premier League side Wolves on a permanent £15.93m transfer in 2020, and Bamford joined the Whites one season before for over £7m from Middlesbrough.

Famous Leeds United Transfers

Former Dutch international, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink famously made his move to La Liga side Atletico Madrid in 1999-00, joined for a massive £15m making him the second-highest transfer sale in club history behind Ferdinand. Harry Kewell notably joined Liverpool from Leeds back in 2003-04 for £9m, where he went on to win the Champions League. Iconically, Premier League veteran and former England international James Milner, began his career for Leeds United as he rose from the youth academy ranks in 2002.

Milner made his move to Newcastle United in 2004, and went on to have a respected career before moving to Liverpool where he also won the Champions League. You do not want to miss out on the latest Leeds United transfer rumours here!
