Leeds United: Gabby Agbonlahor thinks Kalvin Phillips will leave the club -Leeds United Transfer Rumours

Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed that Leeds United will lose Kalvin Phillips for a club participating in “the big competitions”.

The Lowdown: Links away from Elland Road

Since playing a vital role in Leeds’ promotion to the Premier League in 2020, the midfielder has been one of Marcelo Bielsa’s key players and has earned himself a fixed place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad, with 17 caps for his country.

The 25-year-old has now made 218 appearances for the Whites’ first team since coming through the academy, scoring 14 goals and setting up another 12, and has started every game since missing the 5-1 opening day Premier League defeat to Manchester United.

Will Kalvin Phillips remain at Leeds?

The Latest: Leeds will lose Phillips

Speaking to Football Insider, Agbonlahor has claimed that Leeds will lose Phillips and West Ham will lose his England midfield partner Declan Rice, both of whom have been highly coveted by other clubs in recent months.

The Sky Sports pundit said: “You have to be realistic if you’re West Ham or a West Ham fan and also if you’re Leeds or a Leeds fan.

“Aston Villa lost Jack Grealish, West Ham will lose Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips will leave Leeds. These players will love the clubs they are at but they will also want to play in the big competitions.

“You understand them not signing new contracts and wanting to leave. The way they are playing, West Ham and Leeds are heading for big paydays for both of them.

“You see other people playing in those game and you want to do that too. They’ll lose them, definitely.”

The Verdict: World-class ability

The rumours linking Phillips with a move to a club like Manchester City have been gathering pace since the England international’s performances in the European Championship, where he and Rice helped the Three Lions to the final.

Last season, the 25-year-old made 41 accurate passes per game (85% success rate) and won 2.6 tackles per match in his debut campaign in the Premier League.

He has showcased his ability on the world stage during the summer and, as Agbonlahor has hinted, his consistent performances for Leeds will surely only attract more interest from Champions League-contending clubs.
