Leeds United: Todd Cantwell move now appears unlikely

Leeds United: Todd Cantwell move now appears unlikely - Leeds United

Leeds United now look unlikely to sign Norwich City attacker Todd Cantwell before the domestic transfer window closes, according to the latest reports.

English football’s domestic transfer window comes to a close on 16 October and the Whites continue to be linked with a move to bring Cantwell to Elland Road.

The young midfield talent is currently playing for Norwich City in the Championship, suffering relegation last term from the Premier League.

Despite the disappointment last season, Cantwell did manage to impress with six goals and two assists in his 37 top-flight appearances.

Norwich resilient with Cantwell

With the domestic window coming to a close, Football Insider claimed that the Canaries were keen to fend off any interest after receiving two bids from Leeds. And, it now appears that Leeds have cooled off their interest.

Speaking on The Phil Hay Show, The Atheltic journalist claimed that the Yorkshire outfit are not desperate to sign Cantwell:

“They’ve been cool on Cantwell since the rumours came to light on the Sunday of the Sheffield United game.

“My understanding is that it’s been Cantwell’s camp and his agent who’ve been pushing this as much as Leeds have. I think that’s where a lot of the information’s coming from.

“It’s not to say, again, that they don’t like Cantwell or they don’t see the ability in him, but in the way that they were getting on with [Michael] Cuisance and the way that they were getting on with Raphinha, and I know they’ve got longer to think about Cantwell, but it hasn’t felt as if that one was really tugging at them, certainly not towards the back end of the international window.”

Despite Norwich’s desire to keep hold of the midfielder, Cantwell, who is valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, is said be keen on a move to Elland Road.

Could Bielsa regret missing out on Cantwell?

Spending just under £100m in the transfer window, Argentine tactician Bielsa certainly seems to have his eye on Cantwell, even if the links are not quite as concrete as previous reports suggested.

Having missed out on Michael Cuisance last week, Bielsa will not want to miss out on another transfer target.

Cantwell, who is said to be dreaming of a move to Leeds, would be one for the future, potentially learning from the likes of Pablo Hernandez. The Spaniard is a similar type of player creating chances from that left flank and is edging closer and closer to his final playing days.
