Liverpool are interested in completing the signing of Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves in the January transfer window, according to a fresh report.

The Lowdown: Another dismal defeat for Liverpool

The Reds produced yet another woeful performance on Saturday afternoon, succumbing to a fully deserved 3-0 defeat away to Brighton in the Premier League.

Once again, Liverpool’s midfield trio of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Thiago looked all at sea, being comprehensively outplayed by the likes of Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister.

It is imperative that Jurgen Klopp is able to bring in a new midfielder this month, given the much-publicised problems in that area, and it looks like FSG may just spring into action.

The Latest: Liverpool weighing up Neves move

According to The Mirror, Liverpool are ‘weighing up’ the idea of bringing in Neves this month, with the Portuguese’s current Wolves contract expiring at the end of next season.

Klopp is described as a ‘big admirer’ of the 25-year-old in the report, so he could turn to him in the coming weeks.

The Verdict: He could be what Liverpool need

There is no doubting Neves’ ability as a footballer, with the Portugal midfielder someone who can spray a pass (4.56 progressive passes per game) and score spectacular goals, being hailed as ‘fantastic‘ by club and international team-mate Jose Sa.

He is also a close friend of Reds attacker Diogo Jota, having played alongside the 26-year-old for both Wolves and Portugal, which could allow him to settle in quickly to new surroundings.

Neves could be the type of midfielder that Liverpool need, too, considering that he covered more ground than any Wolves player in a run of four out of five matches last year.

Also has averaged more tackles per game (2.6) than any player at Anfield this term apart from Thiago (2.8), so he could be the robust presence that Klopp badly needs in the Reds’ engine room.
