Liverpool: Robbie Fowler surprised by quiet deadline day

Stade de France, Saint-Denis near Paris, France - May 28, 2022. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp looks on as the players warm up.

Liverpool’s quiet January deadline day has left former striker Robbie Fowler believing something could be happening behind the scenes.

The Lowdown: Reds’ window

Jurgen Klopp has so far endured a quiet January transfer window, with the Reds getting their only piece of business sorted before the month had even begun.

Liverpool completed the signing of PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo late in December for an initial fee of £35m (via The Guardian) and remains the only incoming or outgoing currently this month (via Transfermarkt).

Despite them currently sitting ninth in the Premier League and out of both domestic cup competitions, Klopp has been unable to react by strengthening on deadline day so far.

The Latest: Fowler’s comments

However, former Reds star Fowler claimed that he’d be “amazed” if the club weren’t secretly working behind the scenes on incomings in the final hours of the window when speaking to the Liverpool Echo’s Paul Gorst on the Blood Red channel.

He said: “I’d be amazed if something isn’t happening behind the scenes.

“I also think the fact that Jurgen Klopp signed a new contract and that this [being able to sign players] would be one of the prerequisites, if you like.

“Whether it’s now or whether it’s the end of the season, I think maybe someone does need to come in, give the place a little bit of a lift, give it a little bit of a buzz.”

Reds fans, do you remember how many players Liverpool signed last summer?

The Verdict: Incomings needed?

With Liverpool well off the pace in terms of qualifying for the Champions League next season – currently sitting 10 points outside the top four and an incredible 21 points of the top of the table – more activity at Anfield this winter may have been expected.

Gakpo’s arrival could’ve signalled a real window of intent at Anfield but he remains the sole piece of business, which may rub salt into Klopp’s wounds considering he’s yet to score or assist since joining, despite bagging 13 goals and 17 assists in just 24 games in the Netherlands this season prior to the switch.

Given Liverpool’s woes, Fowler’s claims of a lift indeed make complete sense, but with the deadline ticking down, it looks increasingly unlikely that Klopp will be given fresh blood to turn the tide on their season.
