Manchester City: Fans react as Sam Lee reveals what he’d do in the transfer market

Given the fact Manchester City are trailing league-leaders Liverpool by nine points already this season, it’s fair to say this campaign has been somewhat of a struggle.

Indeed, there have been suggestions Pep Guardiola could even walk away from the Etihad should things not go to plan over the course of the campaign and the decision to allow Vincent Kompany to leave in the summer has been questioned ever since Aymeric Laporte’s serious injury back in September.

With that in mind, the Athletic’s Sam Lee delivered his verdict on what the club should do in the transfer market to avoid that kind of mistake happening again. David Silva is due to leave the club at the end of the season and Guardiola has spoken of how he sees Fernandinho as a centre-back going forward after featuring there of late, so Lee believes there’s a need to sign a midfielder in 2020.

As much as it would look like (and possibly even be) a lack of faith in Foden, I do think City would probably need to sign a midfielder next summer. They definitely would if Fernandinho leaves too. Otherwise it’d be another Kompany situation

Obviously, Phil Foden’s lack of game time has been discussed before and, while Lee does believe it’d look like a lack of faith in the England U21 ace, it’s still something that desperately needs doing.

There is simply no option not to renew Fernandinho. It would be crazy and procrastinating now risks another Kompany situation (something unexpected changing the situation in March/April))
