Galatasaray are interested in signing Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji. The Switzerland international has been a key man for Pep Guardiola’s side since joining from Borussia Dortmund in 2022.
He was an unused substitute in City’s season opening 4-0 win over Wolves however, amid uncertainty surrounding his future. ESPN has reported that Galatasaray have made contact with City about the possibility of signing the defender.
The player has two years left on his contract and City have not ruled out a sale if their evaluation is met. Akanji is understood to be of interest to Galatasaray for his versatility.
Predominantly a centre-back, he is comfortable playing right-back as well and started their for City in the 2023 Champions League final. Galatasaray are targeting a defender and a goalkeeper before the Turkish Super Lig transfer window closes on Sept. 12.
The deadline to register their squad for the Champions League however is on on Sept. 2, and they would prefer to have their business wrapped up by then.
City consider Akanji sale

Akanji has made 85 Premier League appearances for City in his three seasons with the club, establishing himself as one of Guardiola’s must trusted defenders. The 30-year-old is a seasoned international as well, making 71 appearances for Switzerland.
His transfer value is believed to be around the €30m mark but it is unknown whether or not City would be willing to except less. Given the player’s age and remaining contract, City could decide to cash in on the player. Galatasaray have not submitted an official offer for the player as it stands.
The Turkish club are also believed to be interested in City goalkeeper Ederson. The Brazilian keeper was left out of the squad for Saturday’s season opener due to illness, although he too has been the subject of much speculation this summer.
Rumours of the player’s desire to leave the club have spread, with interest from several clubs across Europe and Saudi Arabia reportedly interested.
City prefer to keep both Akanji and Ederson but will not stand in their way should the duo indicate a desire to leave.
