TalkSport reporter Alex Crook has insisted that Marcus Rashford and Manchester United are willing to get a new contract sorted.

The Lowdown: Rashford is proving his worth

It has been quite surreal to watch the way Rashford has taken his game up a level since returning from the World Cup, having netted in 10 in his last 10 league games for the Red Devils.

Man United have the option to extend Rashford’s contract by a year which will seemingly be taken up by the club, according to Crook, but they will be eager to extend it even further.

However, the form of Rashford has seen other clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain take an interest in him, and with every goal he scores, the more money he could perhaps demand in a new deal as he proves his worth to United.

The Latest: A new Rashford contract may not be too far away

Crook has afforded Man United fans with some good news that both parties have a willingness to thrash out new terms and tie Rashford down to a long-term deal at his boyhood club.

He said: “They’re working away, Manchester United. I think there’s a willingness on behalf of him [Rashford] to sign a new deal with his boyhood club. Clearly, there’s a big willingness on Manchester United to get him signed up for a long-term deal, because he’s just about the best striker in Europe at this moment in time.

“They’ve got the year’s option on the end of his contract which they will trigger so it’s not of immediate urgency, but I think they’ll want to get him tied down.

“What’s interesting is they’ve got this sort of Ronaldo rule that they’re trying to implement where no one player earns significantly more than anybody else. I think they might have to test the waters when it comes to Marcus Rashford, because every goal he scores, he can pretty much name his own paycheck.”

The Verdict: Man United must tie Rashford down to a long-term deal

It would be absolutely insane for Man United to stall over a new deal with Rashford, as with every passing game he scores or merely performs well, that may only boost his confidence and increase the level of interest in the attacker.

Meanwhile, if they fail to offer him what he believes he’s worth, that could well anger the boyhood Man United fan and see his head turned by other big European superpowers.

Rashford is currently performing at a level that few might have expected after his slump in form last season which saw him score just four Premier League goals. He now has a huge platform upon which to showcase his ability, with Man United set to contest the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United at Wembley this coming weekend.
