Newcastle United have so far failed to capture their top targets in the summer transfer window, but they are not ready to give up just yet.
The Magpies have reignited their interest in Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga and have already submitted a £45m bid for the talented Premier League star, a bid which was quickly rejected.
The Athletic’s transfer expert David Ornstein confirmed Newcastle’s attempt last week, and while the North East giants are yet to make another offer, Forest are believed to be holding out for £60m.
It’s been a frustrating start to the recruitment drive on Tyneside, with striker targets Liam Delap and João Pedro both opting to join Chelsea instead – a setback that will no doubt frustrate Eddie Howe.
Nevertheless, it will be crucial for the club to avoid putting all of their eggs in one basket this summer and swiftly pursue alternative options to ensure new signings are secured before their Champions League campaign begins.
According to Football Insider, Newcastle are preparing to resume negotiations and are expected to make a second offer for Elanga.
The report claims the Magpies are determined to land their top target after missing out on Pedro and will return to Forest with an improved bid.
Should Newcastle pay £60m for Anthony Elanga?

There is no doubt that signing a right winger is a top priority for the Geordies this summer, and it’s imperative they find the ideal partner to complement Alexander Isak.
Given their experience together at international level, it’s easy to understand why Newcastle are so keen to secure Elanga’s services.
Since joining Forest from Manchester United, Elanga has gone from strength to strength, playing a key role in helping them qualify for Conference League football last season, finishing seventh under Nuno Espírito Santo after an impressive campaign.
Across 82 appearances for the Garibaldi Reds, the Swedish winger – once hailed as a “game-changer” by Ralf Rangnick – has scored 11 goals and provided 21 assists, averaging a goal contribution every 169 minutes.
Although a £60m fee would represent the second-highest ever paid by the Magpies, it could prove to be a worthwhile investment if Elanga continues to develop his craft, having already established himself as one of the Premier League’s most dangerous wingers.
With that in mind, another move for Elanga is certainly one to watch for the St James’ Park faithful and would go a long way in easing concerns about the club’s recent struggles in the market.
