Newcastle fans on Twitter were delighted with young midfielder Sean Longstaff’s performance against Cardiff in what was a crucial relegation six-pointer.
The 21-year-old was making his second start of the season against the Bluebirds and showed composure beyond his years to help the Magpies to a simple 3-0 win against Neil Warnock’s men.
Some fans have even compared him to a young Michael Carrick in the way that he controls the midfield and always looks for a forward pass, and whilst that may be a bit of an overreaction, Longstaff certainly has bags of potential.
Having struck his first ever senior goal for the Tynesiders against Blackburn in the FA Cup recently, hopes are high that Longstaff will make fans forget about Mike Ashley’s ineptitude and a lack of signings, and instead give them something to cheer about in the form of a burgeoning homegrown talent.
Let’s take a look at how Magpies supporters reacted to the 21-year-old’s display…
Fair play to Longstaff … the lad has definitely grasped his opportunity, and shown to a much wider audience the potential he has . The fact he's made it difficult for Diame and Shelvey to waltz back in to the starting 11 shows just how well he's done! #nufc #hardworkpaysoff

#toon need to tie Longstaff down to a big contract and start building a team around him, the kid is going places! Him along with Dubs, Schar, Ljuene, Fern, is a solid defensive unit, buy Rondon and two wide players, we b good! #nufc

Three games in and Longstaff is being compared to Carrick – let’s not get carried away with crazy statements #NUFC
