Newcastle United: Why Mauricio Pochettino declined takeover project

The reason as to why Mauricio Pochettino declined to be part of the takeover project at Newcastle United has been revealed as Marca (via NUFC 360) reported that the former Tottenham, Southampton and Espanyol boss wanted to review future offers if and when he got them.

As per the outlet, Pochettino was apparently offered millions to be part of the Tyneside project, but it was complicated.

Would Pochettino succeed at Newcastle after the potential takeover?

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabian (KSA) group behind the proposed takeover also saw the 48-year old as the ideal coach for gatecrashing the ‘big six’, namely Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Spurs, although Leicester and Wolverhampton Wanderers have threatened to buck the top six trend in the Premier League this season.

Nevertheless, given the previous pedigree of Pochettino, perhaps one can see why he was targeted by the would-be owners to become the new manager at St. James’ Park. Not only did he guide the Lilywhites to the Champions League final last term, in which they lost 2-0 to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, but the Argentine has a decent managerial record in the English top flight.

Boasting a 51.6% win percentage, Pochettino has won 132 of his 256 games as manager of both the Saints and Tottenham in the Premier League, according to Transfermarkt.

However, the Argentina has seemingly declined the chance to manage in the northeast for now, but who knows whether this will be a lasting decision if a bigger offer comes knocking at the door.

Which year did Ashley launch his Newcastle takeover?

One thing that is for sure, though, is that he would be a big coup for the Magpies if he eventually becomes Steve Bruce’s successor at St James’ Park.
