Newcastle United central defender Fabian Schar has been named in one of Sky Sports‘ alternative teams in a continuing feature from the platform.
This time the outlet have decided to make the best tackling eleven of the Premier League so far, and Schar makes the cut. Incidentally, former Magpie Ayoze Perez also makes the team, alongside Richarlison and David McGoldrick in a front three. Behind them in midfield is Wilfred Ndidi, Declan Rice and Oriol Romeu, with Schar joined in defence by Djibril Sidibe, Willy Boly and Jonny. Tom Heaton takes his place in between the sticks.
Schar averages 2 tackles per game in the top flight this campaign, but he also boasts other impressive stats for a central defender, according to Sofascore. The Swiss international wins 5.1 total duels per league match, including 3.6 on the ground and 1.5 aerially. He also averages 3.7 clearances and 2.1 interceptions, and has not yet made any errors leading to shots, as per the website.
According to Whoscored, Schar’s defensive stats rank amongst the highest of his teammates, whilst he also makes 0.9 blocks per Premier League game and boasts an average rating of 6.85, the fourth-highest in the entire squad.
The 28-year old has made half a century of appearances in all competitions on Tyneside, where he has managed six goals and one assists, arguably an impressive record considering the position that he plays (via Transfermarkt). The defender has also gained 52 senior caps for his country, scoring eight goals.
The Toon Army signed Schar back in 2018 from Deportivo La Coruna and it is perhaps safe to say that he has been an astute acquisition given his defensive stats and impressive goal-scoring record for a centre-half.
