Rafael Benitez appears to be on the brink at Newcastle United with the Telegraph reporting that the Spaniard has warned owner Mike Ashley he will walk away from St. James’ Park in the summer if signings are not made this month.
It seems, however, that the Spaniard’s ultimatum has not fallen on deaf ears with Newcastle having made an enquiry for Atletico Madrid’s £18m-rated (Transfermarkt) Gelson Martins, according to Sky Sports.
Martins only joined Atletico Madrid last summer after terminating his contract with former club Sporting Lisbon but has failed to make much of an impact at the Wanda Metropolitano, making a loan move to a club such as Newcastle make sense.
Meanwhile, from the Magpies’ perspective, it is a move they could also desperately do with this month. Benitez has not got a lot from his current crop of wingers so far this season and really needs an individual of Martins’ ability to inject some freshness into the side.
